  • Good Deal

I bought few things this weekend.  Lately I've been good and haven't gone crazy shopping.  .
I got few items from Trader Joe.  Tangerine Sugar Scrub, Oats make-up remover towels, and Burt's Bees' Ointmnet.
I've been a long time user of Trader Joe's Tangerine Sugar Scrub.  It smells really good - fruity smell.  I use once a week, and it makes the skin really soft.   BTW, it's sweet - I tasted it.....
Oh!  just be careful  and make sure you rinse your tub well after you use it, becuase the oil kind of makes the bath tub slippery.
Oats make-up remover towel is good.  The texure of the towel is soft, it's even softer than Pond's make-up remover towel.  It's alcohol free and good for sensitive skin.  It actually makes my skin smooth and refershed - not greasy.  I like it.
Burt Bee's Ointment is something I keep in my purse.  It's all natural formula:  almond oil, olive oil, beeswax, lavender extracts, etc.  It's good for bumps, bruise, burns, and bites....
I alsobought two fleece pullover form Old Navy - since for some reaons Smalln took one of my fleece jacket.  It's such a good deal for $12 each.  Fleece jacket is my favoriate weekend outfits for the winter.  T-shirt/capri/flip flop is my typical weekend outfit.  Fleece pullover/jeans/flip flop then is my winter must have.

  • A note from Netherlands

I'm dedicating this article to my friend, Lily in Netherlands who takes risk to pursue her dream and experiences life fully.

Lily dropped us a note from Netherlands this weekend. For some reasons I was truly touched by her e-mail and can really see how much my old friend has grown in the past few months.

Lily was my roommate from Santa Barbara. Earlier this year, she moved across Atlantic Ocean to be with her love in Netherlands for few years. As someone who has lived her whole life following rules carefully, I analyzed and tried to talk her out of it.  "You has a good job in San Francisco that you love, you can't just give up your career."  "It's only two years and he will be stationed back to U.S soon.  True love can survive these two years, and you can't just quit your life here and move to a foreign country".  "Maybe you should try to find a job in Netherlands first and then move. You can't even speak Dutch".  I can still remember sitting in my living room this Spring and both Chia and I were trying to rationalize with her.  After weeks of consideration, Lily still decided to move.  Being her friends we might think it's a risky decision & crazy idea but we support her and wish her well.

Now seeing her adapting to her new life well, making new friends and adjusting to "Potential" military wives life style- I'm so happy for her and praise her courage.  I am proud of her to take risk and explore opportunities in life.  From her e-mail, I can tell she works hard to get acquainted with the new country. It's amazing to see my bar/club hopping city friend has grown to adapt to simple life so quickly and to appreciate things/people around her.
I am glad that she didn't listen to her risk adverse friend and went ahead to pursue her dream.
Lily, I wish you well and am looking forward to see you this winter.

Most of us live by rules our whole lives.  We go by society standards, always busy and on the go.  We work hard for our 9 to 5 jobs and are risk adverse. We rarely take on tasks that we aren't sure about. We put on hold for that one trip we always want to take, the people we want to be with, and that one thing we want to learn.  By dong so, I wonder if we miss out the opportunity to truly experience life.

  • Shanghai Restaurant

Mom and I visited this Shanghai place few weeks ago in San Gabriel. It's so yummy.  I've wanted to post it on my blog for a while- but was lazy lately.
The restaurant is located at 2nd floor of Focus Plaza. The business is good, luckily we arrived early so didn't need to wait for the table.
Mom knew someone who works here, so she helped us to order few of their signature dishes.
We ordered the traditional Shanghai small pan fried meat bum - Don't you think they are like little soldiers standing next to each other? - so cute.  The sauce is really good- house speical black vinegar sauce.  Take a bit of it, and the juice just flowing out of it.  This is yummy - tasted almost like the ones that are sold by street vendors in Taiwan.   This is my faovriate dish in this restaurant.  We actually brought three home for SmallN since Mom thought she would love it - but I ate them for lunch the next day....sorry
Speical Duck Stewed Soup with tofu skin, ham, and chinese mushroom.  They stewed it for a very long time, so the duck meat is very tender, and the soup is very flavorable.    The portion is big, a little too much for two people - it became my dinner for many nights.....
Sweet & Sour Fish and Stir fried veggie.  I did't like the fish too much, I still like steam fish with wine,  ginger, green onion and soy sauce better.  The veggie is good, I like stir fried veggie with garlic.
The price here is very reasonable - Mom thinks next time if we have family events, we should come here.  Maybe we should have dinner here when Nebres is in town for Christmas?

  • Day Trip to Santa Barbara

I drove up to Santa Barbara for a meeting last week.  Although it's only a day trip, but an opportunity to visit my college down is great.
I left house a bit after 6am and brought Mom's breakfast with love.  It's great living at home, Mom prepared me breakfast to go every day:  a bag of fruit, and toasted bite size PB&J.  Thank you, Mom!
Santa Barbara is one of the most beautiful cities in California - and I'm so lucky to live there for four years.
I enjoyed the drive to Santa Barbara (beside the traffic during rush hours).  Beautiful scenery - mountain on right and ocean on left.  Even after years, I still get so excited the moment I see the first glance of the ocean on HWY 101.
Santa Barbara office located right in the heart of downtown.  The moment I entered the parking lot, I recognized the building - we used to wait for the bus here during UCSB years.  It's a historical spanish building right next to SB Court house.- I would never guess then that years later I would work for this company.
After my meeting I walked around State Street, not much changes since my college year - Simple & worry free.  I just love this town.

  • What I'm Reading Now

This is what I'm currently reading - For One More Day by Mitch Albom.  I'm only one third through the book, so you would need to wait for a while till my review.  The book explores the question of what would you do if you could spend one more day with a lost loved one?
From time to time, we put things, people and feelings on hold and take them for granted with the assumption that we would have one more day later to deal with it.  What if you just miss that one more day and don't have the chance to fix it?  What you would of done differently?
I'm sure we've all experienced losing someone in life, and have wished we could of have chance to do things differenlty or maybe not.

  • Equator Coffee House

What's your favoriate coffee place?  Mega Starbucks Chain, peet's coffe or local Mom & Dad coffee shop?
For my daily morning coffee   - My favoriate is Illy Coffee, but it's rarely avaialbe in West Coast.  So Tully coffee has become my new love, but now it's hard to find in Southern California.  I again settle for Starbucks as my daily run.
I've always loved sitting in cafe to kill time.  I studied in the coffee shops all the time instead of library as a student - the smell coffe and soothing Jazz background music actually made me very productive.  Little old beach town styled local coffee house at Isla Vista, University owned coffee house over seeing lagoon in UCSB,  Starbucks at down town Palo Alto, and coffee stands inside Stanford bookstore were all my favoriate hangout place.  I preferred local unique coffee house instead of chain coffee house.  Equator coffee house is one of my favoriate local coffee house located in Old Town Pasadena.
Equator is a hidden jewel in Old Town Pasadena.  SoHo styled coffee house in the little dirty alley - only locals can find it.  It has been opened for at least 10+ years, and Karin took me there first many years ago.  This has become my frequent stops ever since.
Just like many local coffee house in SoHo, no fancy interior design,  just some old sofa, wooden charis and tables with live local alternative music band in the weekend nights.  I always order Black Forest Mocha with one extract shot  - black berry syrup Mocha - very yummy
I took Mom there this Satruday.  Don't be fooled by her big happy smile - she was a bit freak out by the "old" furnitures there and didn't want to sit on the sofa....I guess that's called generation gap????

  • Welcome Fall in Old Town Pasadena

Mom and I spent a leisure Saturday afternoon at Old Town Pasadena.  Old Town is one of my favoriate place in Southern California, a great place to dine, shop or just walk around & chill.  It's popluar place for local & tourist for both its modern entertinment & unique old town neighborhood hangout place.
Mom & I both have passion for interor deisgn, and love to window shop at Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, and Z gallerie - especially during this time of the year when all the stores start  to display Harvest & Thanksgiving home decoration & table setting.
We also like to walk around the antique mall, checkout antique furniture, art work, and jewelry - although we never bought thing there since we don't know where and who used to own those items.....I actually really like this antiuqe shop building - very old fashion and reminds me of Europe.
I took Mom to that Dog Bakery where they sell pastry for dog - Mom thoguht I wanted to get some snack .
Jane, when you come down and visit in few weeks - I will take you there, and you can get some tiramisu for Buster.
I was also glad to find this shop in Old Town - I used to love this shop in San Francsico.  Can you guess what they are selling?
It's soap!  Lush is know for handmade bath & body product.  It looks like a gourmet cheese shop!
The weather is perfect today.  It's so beautiful in Old Town with all the fall displays - lots of pumpkin.  Fall is my favoriate season of the year.  I love harvest festival, Thanksgiving, autumn leaf, fall fashion, and family gathering.   Welcome Fall........

  • School Spirit - Go Rams

Can you guess what this is?
I got this magnet from my manicure lady, Judy as my support to my home shchool, Temple City High.  Judy is helping her daughter selling for her cheerleading team.  I remember Karin and I used to go door to door around the neighborhood with Christmas catalog trying to raise money for our chrior.  We got so excited when neighbors would willing to order wrapping papaer, chrismas orinaments, or calendar from us.  I recalld I met certain quota, and even recieved a free phone as a gift - (it's a see through color phone, I still remember it ).  I appriciated families, friends and neighbors who would buy things from me, and this is why now I would always buy from kids.
Temple City high had a pretty good football team in 90s - I am not sure about now.  I remember every Friday night during the game season, we would see the player walked around the campus full of confident with their white shirts, khaki pants, and dark green ties - they were the stars of the school.  Too bad that I never went to the game at high school.  Maybe one of these days, I would go and support my home town team.
I can watch and understand most of "national loved" sports: soccer, baseball, and basketball.  However, I still don't understand foodball.  Well, I think UCSB is the one to blame.   Why?  Because UCSB does not have a football team.  Most gals would learn about football during college year by going to the games & supports their college team or their favoriate good looking players.  Since UCSB doesn't have one - so I lost my chance.  By the time I arrived at Stanford, it was too late.  Although Cardinal is one of nation's strongest college football team, but since I didn't develop my passion at young age - I miss out again.
Well, maybe one day I would learn to love football.  For now, Go RAMS, Go Gaucho, Go Cardinal  - I support you all!
