I received an e-mail from Alfredo yesterday, who will be in town for the conference next weekend.
Alfredo is my old colleague from Citi in NYC, we haven’t seen each other since I moved back to California in late 2001. I am so excited to see him after all these years.
Alfredo a.k.a. Al-The-Man or Al for short worked with me along with Asha, Rati, Alison, and Ted in the strategy group for Citicards. I kept in touch with most of them even years after I left NY. None of us are working in that same group anymore, even our most Driven Boss, Arun has also moved on.
Speaking of my old boss Arun, I can’t help thinking about all his famous phrases. We used to have a secret competition during our staff meeting to see who can use the most quotes during the meeting. Here are few of his quotes….It’s been so long, I can’t remember all of them. (P.S. If any of my Citi Crew out there can remember others, feel free to add on…..)
- You can bring the horse to the water, but you can’t make it drinks
- You can only skin the cat so many ways
- Beating on the dead horse
- Even Tiger Wood can’t hit the ball without the club
Did you see the pattern? What is it with animal cruelty?
Since all of us are PowerPoint Kings and Queens – as we spent most of time doing strategy and competitive analysis decks, for Arun’s 35th birthday, we put together a presentation for him with all his famous quotes.…..I wonder if any of us out there still have that ppt file.
That was a good old time. We were young, full of ambition, and with such bright futures ahead of us.
I don’t think I ever had a proper good-bye with my pals back in NY, since I left in such hurry and unexpectedly. They have been my great supports during that time. Al and I were working on some utility outsource project together back then, he made joke with me to cheer me up from time to time or sent me cute pictures of his beautiful daughter. Asha would call me and check on me almost every day. Rati sent me cards for encouragement. Even my boss, Arun was a great support to help me through the transition and allowed me to telecommute for months.
It’s interesting how God placed different people in your life at different stages, and somehow connected us together. They are great friends. Hey, we never know with the consolidation in financial services industry, maybe one day we will be in the same big happy family again….
